My Little Man is Turning 1

In the Korean Culture, turning one is a huge deal. I think it goes back to war times where if babies make it to their 1st birthday it was considered a big thing as many did not. So to celebrate this, we hold what is called a Dohl, or Dol. If you have never been to one or have seen one… the only way to explain it is, it’s basically a wedding. For my first son’s 1st birthday, we rented out a gym and had decorations, a sweet table, mounds of sushi and Korean rice cakes. We had flowers and favors and table chair covers. It was big and he got so many presents that we still have some in the basement that have not been opened!

So here is some pictures of the big event!

Stay tuned…

Featured Photographer – Carolyn Price Photography

Proptography Photo _2

I met Carolyn a little while ago when she came to my shop. Later I had asked her to photograph some props for me because I could tell that she had an eye for how things should look. We have done 2 photoshoots together and I love all of the pictures that she has taken for me. Carolyn is such a sweetheart, she really is! She has given me so much confidence in my work and abilities. She has become an instant friend and someone who I can share ideas and concepts with. She also has two boys like me so it has been easy to connect with her and share stories!

She is so humble and that is something very rare in the photography industry, she is so talented but she doesn’t boast about it. I love that she does clean and simple, because I know with photography sometimes less is more. She has taken a picture of both my boys and I love those pictures so much. She is one talented lady and I am lucky to know her personally!

First off, tell me a bit about yourself:

Hi there! I’m Carolyn Price and I was born in the year of the snake, making me 36 this year. I have two adorable little boys that bring me so much joy each day; my youngest little man is 5 months old and my oldest just turned 3. I met my husband 10 years ago while playing Ultimate Frisbee and here we are – married for 6 years with two little men in our lives who keep us super busy. I graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Education. Being a scientist at heart, I never thought I was that creative, but photography has certainly brought that out in me and I love it! I’ve also learned that there is a bit of science to photography and I love how light plays such a huge role in every capture.

What got you interested in Photography?

Back in the day, I used to spend a lot of my spending money on film and developing the film. I also owned the Joy Cam and those little mini instant Polaroid imitation cameras. I remember my mother telling me I was wasting all my money on developing pictures (many of which were just horrible shots). I didn’t listen, as I found great joy in capturing the moment, the emotion and most important the memory. I remember the excitement of waiting to see what my pictures looked like once they were developed. However, I got the most joy from my pictures months or years after when I’d stumble across an album and thumb through it. I loved how those pictures were able to bring me back to that moment in time and how it would elicit memories, emotions, sounds or even smells. I still love looking back at pictures, which is why I continue to print my pictures and insert them into albums the old school way!

How long have you been in the business?

I wouldn’t say I’m in the photography business as I truly don’t see it that way. I’m lucky that I have a teaching career that I also love doing and I am able to pursue this solely as a hobby . I’d do it for free all the time if I could. I charge to justify the time spent away from my husband and boys…and to perpetuate my prop addiction; that’s how I met Nicole! Hours can pass by when I’m doing anything photography related…it’s my escape. I can lose myself in it and I’ve never found something that does that to me before. I’d call it my passion. I love how you can continually improve and I love how diverse photography styles can be. It is very personal.

Proptography Photo _3

What is your Photography style?

I’m not sure if I have a style. I’m a lifestyle photographer who works with natural light. I like clean and simple.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

Other photographers are definitely my inspiration. I’m often in awe of what they can do with their camera.

Proptography_3

What is your favorite type of photo shoot and why?

My cousin and I have taken numerous photography courses together at SAIT and I had thought that if you enjoyed photography that you’d be good at it all. Wrong. I know, I probably should have known that. She is a very talented landscape photographer and portrait work isn’t her passion. I don’t dislike any type of photography, I just wouldn’t say that all aspects are my strength. I think I enjoy maternity and newborn sessions the most. I love the excitement of the new parents as they anticipate the arrival of their little bean and I just love, love newborns – more now than ever because I’m done having kids and my newborn is now 5 months! Where does time go?

Proptography Photo _1

Do you use props in your photo shoots and if so what is your favorite prop to use?

I enjoy using props to compliment a shoot…as long as they are simple and not distracting. I love them in newborn shoots the most.

Where are you located?

I am located in SW Calgary, however, most of my photoshoots are on location. Like I said, I’m more of a lifestyle photographer.

Do you have another job other then photography, if so what do you do?

I’m a teacher. I’ve been teaching since 2001.

~Flower/ Knit Hat Combo~

IMG_2188

Proptography probably has the largest selection of newborn knit items in Calgary, but we needed something to jazz them up. A photographer that bought one of my hats used a hair clip to make it look more pretty so I got the idea of doing a combo for the knit hats and adding flower clips. Now they are $25 for the set, but you can mix and match if you would like. You can also buy them separate for $20 for the hat and $5 for the hair clip.

Featured Photographer – Angela Cheung Photography

Time for another photographer to be featured! I met Angela a little while ago when she came to my humble shop. Right away I liked her, she was happy and I knew she was a lovely person inside and out. Then she sent me some photos that she had taken with a few props and I loved them! There is something almost angelic about her photography. Her work is simple but so profound and speaks to me. I was looking over the pictures she had sent to me for this feature and they reminded me of paintings, perfect moments in time. She is located in Calgary so if you ever need a family photographer, she is the go to gal!

Angela Cheung Photography_0092

First off, tell me a bit about yourself:

My name is Angela Cheung and I am a professional photographer from Calgary, Alberta – born and raised!! I’m currently 32 years old,  wife of 6 years to a wonderful man, and a mother to an amazing daughter who’s four!   I graduated from the University of Calgary in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree.

What got you interested in Photography?

I’ve loved photography for as long as I can remember.  My dad used to buy me rolls of film as gifts and let me go crazy on his Nikon 35mm.  That pure joy of capturing life’s moments still runs through my soul today.  Although my formal training was to be a lawyer or a teacher– deep down I knew I was cut out to do something a lot more creative with my life.  It wasn’t until I started planning my own wedding and looking for photographers that made me realize photography could be more than just a hobby.  I started out photographing friends and family for the first 2 years and by  2010, I opened my business.

How long have you been in the business of photography?

3 years.

Angela Cheung Photography_0101

What is your Photography style?

This question is always a tough one for me!  I’m not sure if I fit quite into a particular photography style, but I’d like to say that my work tends to have more of a soft / romantic look yet still giving it some refinement and edginess.  I love shooting in natural light which definitely helps achieve that style.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

For me, fashion is as much a passion as photography is – so naturally, my inspiration and styling comes a lot from fashion photography.  I find both fashion and photography are creative outlets for me and they work together hand in hand.  I hope my images are a reflection of that! It excites me when I see editorials and stylized shoots – they can really showcase a photographer’s creativity and boundaries!

What genre of photography do you dislike the most and why?

I personally don’t have any genre dislikes – but I’m probably not the best at nature / landscape photography!  I’m definitely more of a people-person and I think that the interaction and connections I have with my clients are the triggers to my creativity!

Do you use props in your photo shoots and if so what is your favorite prop to use?

I really depends on the shoot I’m doing.  I tend to work with props for newborn sessions.  Otherwise, I will use props for stylized shoots or editorials ( ie. Engagements or Boudoir ) – and they can be important in help creating the look and feel you’re after.

Angela Cheung Photography_0121

Which photographer do you look up to and why?

OH! So tough!!  I really can’t just name one – I look up to so many different photographers!  I follow the works of many wedding photographers, fashion photographers, boudoir photographers – it’s honestly really hard to narrow it down!  But if I were to pick two of my top pics – I’d have to say: 1. the amazing Dave + Quin Cheung of DQ Studios of Calgary, who I had the honor of hiring for my wedding and 2. the uber stylish Ellen Ho of Hong Photography in Vancouver, who I had the honor of hiring for my family portraits.

Where are you located?

In SW Calgary.

Do you have another job other then photography, if so what do you do?

Nope, I’m a full time mommy + full time photographer!

Featuring the AMAZING Inside-In Cinnamon Bun

Hmmm Maybe one day we will find a new name… but for now that is what they are called. So my amazing little sister came over last Sunday and we came up with these amazing buns. They are so delicious and decadent. They are basically a bun with everything inside. That way, when you bit it you get the perfect proportion of cream cheese icing to bun ratio. It’s perfect and I am feeling pretty generous enough to show you exactly how to make them with recipes!!!! You should be very excited!!! Please try this out for your next gathering, I promise everyone will love you and want to be your friend, maybe even lover? They are that good!

First you need to start out with a good dough. And even though I went to pastry school… I hate hate hate dough. For me, cakes came easy but it was the breads and pastries that required time and patience. Until one day I was wasting my time on pinterest and found this amazing dough recipe. The recipe was originally for croissants but I started to make other things with it. Like chocolate pecan stuffed buns and pizza buns. And oh my goodness they were so good!!! Please excuse me, I am drooling a bit 🙂

Here is the Dough recipe. I pinned it from the Six Sisters Website, I really love all of their recipes!

Easy Homemade Rolls Recipe:

Ingredients:
1 tablespoon active dry yeast (one packet)
1/2 cup granulated sugar
3 eggs, beaten
1 cup lukewarm water
1/2 cup butter, melted
1/2 teaspoon salt 4 cups all-purpose flour
Directions:
Mix yeast, sugar, eggs, water, butter and salt together in a large bowl, all at once.  Add 4 cups of all-purpose flour.  Mix  well with a spoon, cover bowl with plastic wrap and allow dough to rise 4-6 hours or overnight in the refrigerator.   Do not knead the dough.  Turn  out dough on a lightly floured surface.
– The rest of the instructions are mine for the Cinnamon Buns:
Roll out dough (you can do it in 2 batches because it’s a lot of dough) and cut into squares with a pizza cutter. Put a small amount of butter in the middle of each square and sprinkle with a Sugar, Brown Sugar and Cinnamon mixture. Close buns as shown on the step by step pictures below. Heat Oven to 375* and place buns with the closed surface down. Bake for 13-14 minutes or until the tops are slightly golden brown.
Next you want to get your cream cheese icing made. You can do this while the buns are baking. I usually use 1 package of cream cheese to 2 cups of icing sugar and 1 tsp of vanilla extract. Mix the cream cheese in your mixer first to ensure a smooth icing and then add your vanilla, then icing sugar.
Once the buns are out of the oven and cooled, you want to put your cream cheese icing in a piping bag and poke it into a bun. Squeeze a little until you can’t squeeze no more. That means its full of awesomeness…. next, now you should probably sit down for this step because you will fall over with enjoyment. Take a big bite, see… what did I tell you?
Please enjoy with extreme delightfulness!!!
Please note that these pictures should be viewed from the Bottom of the page to the top… as my blog format is a little messed up right now. So start at the bottom and make your way up 🙂

Featured Photographer – Neu Image Photography

blue 048

So this featured photographer is someone very special to me! My little sister Sarah!!!! I was talking about how Brittney’s photography made me think back to holding my babies in my arms and then I remembered that my sister actually took pictures of those moments for me, so of course I had to tell everyone about her. Oh and by the way, isn’t she gorgeous? Mmmhmm! I know you might be shocked but I didn’t always have this bursting love for her, when we were little we would fight all the time. I remember she would always hit me and I would hit her back and then she would tell on me… and guess who got in trouble? But those days are far behind us and we have been able to bond over being creative. We are both very creative and love art very much. I think that is why she is so good at photography! One thing that made me so proud, was to hear that her inspiration comes from within. I thought that was so poetic and beautiful and has created an opportunity for her to just express herself through photography that is truly amazing.

So Sarah did my maternity and newborn pictures of my 2nd baby boy, and I was so so thrilled with them! But she does much more than those types of photoshoots, she literally does everything you can think of!

This is a photo of my brother, that Sarah took. Isn’t he a handsome young man!? He is currently in Ireland serving a mission!

And this is my baby sister who I love so very much! She is so pretty and just so amazing! Sarah also took this picture

First off, tell me a bit about yourself:

My name is Sarah Neu and I am 19 years old. I am currently attending Mount Royal University full time, with a part time job working at a senior’s home along the side. I love anything to do with art, especially dancing, music and photography! I am very optimistic and full of life!

What got you interested in Photography?

I think the generation I’ve grown up in is very visually based. We are surrounded by media that involves millions of pictures and images. We also have access to fun photo editors and me being an artsy kind of gal, the editors were a great way for me to be creative. The moment I got my first camera I couldn’t stop taking pictures and playing around with how they looked and that clearly never stopped!

(Me Pregnant and then my Baby <3)

What is your Photography style?

I love using natural light! Most of my photos, if not all, have been taken outdoors. I love the way the photo looks so delicate and graceful just by adding a bit of light!

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

Honestly I don’t think I have any other source than what comes from inside me. I mean I’ve looked outwards to magazines and other photographers online, but I wouldn’t say that my inspiration came from anyone or anywhere else. When I’m holding my camera, great things just seem to happen!

2456631_orig

What is your favorite type of photo shoot and why?

I think my favorite types of shoots are portraits. I like working one on one with the individual and trying out different things with who I’m taking photos of. Sometimes it’s harder to be more creative say when you are taking photos of a family, as little kids don’t like to sit still!

sarah2

Do you use props in your photo shoots and if so what is your favorite prop to use?

I do use props! I think they make photos so much fun! Some of my favorite props that I’ve used so far are open back frames and giant flowers!

Where are you located?

I don’t have my own studio location but hope one day to have one! As for now I just work out of my home and do the shoots on location.

sarah

Do you have another job other then photography, if so what do you do?

Yes, I work at a seniors home part time and I love it!
